I don't live in United States and I don't understand the ground reality, but I can definitely resonate with what you feel. The worst feeling is when people who are educated make such choices despite being informed on every level.
There is no point of discussing or debating with such people either which shifts talking sense into them out of the park.
Although, your brother's response seems very appropriate where he cites "we can only see the change we see around the world" and take action when required.
I think it's more about building the community which is still under our control than the world stage of politics which could eventually only change when every local community is informed and ready.
I say this because still less than 60-70% people vote, I think that's one serious issue right there.
